It has been established that in patients with functional diseases of the gastrointestinal tract (FD GIT) there are violations of neurohumoral regulation based on changes in the content of melatonin. The reduced level of melatonin in patients with functional diseases of the gastrointestinal tract (FD GIT) shows the possible participation of this neurotransmitter in the formation of clinical manifestations of functional dyspepsia and irritable bowel syndrome. Treatment of irritable bowel syndrome with the use of Melatonin proved to be more effective than other regimens, which was confirmed by histological and electron microscopic examination of the mucous membrane of the colon.

Key Words: melatonin, gastrointestinal tract, functional disorders.
