Prediabetes is a common metabolic condition that often remains undiagnosed and significantly increases the risk of developing type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular complications.
This article examines the role of the family physician in the early detection and management of prediabetes within primary healthcare.
Particular attention is given to screening strategies, diagnostic criteria, and the identification of individuals at increased risk.
Lifestyle modification, including dietary changes, increased physical activity, and behavioral interventions, is highlighted as the cornerstone of prevention, while pharmacological approaches such as metformin may be considered for selected high-risk patients.
The paper also emphasizes the importance of a multidisciplinary approach, patient education, and addressing organizational barriers to improve the effectiveness of prevention in primary care.
Key words: prediabetes, family physician, primary care, screening, type 2 diabetes prevention
