The article presents a modern description of the phenotypes of diverticular disease.

The risk factors of diverticular disease, the features of the course of the disease and the ethical role of the intestinal microbiota are highlighted.

The feasibility of using probiotics and metabiotics based on short-chain fatty acids, butyrate and inulin in the treatment of diverticular disease is substantiated.

Key words: diverticular disease, microbiota, probiotics, metabiotics
