In 1816, the French physician René-Théophile-Hyacinthe Laennec (1781-1826) discovered a method of mediate auscultation. For three years he conducted research. In 1819, he summarized his observations on mediate auscultation in the book published in French. After that, the method began to spread throughout the world. In the Russian Empire, P.A. Charukovsky (1790—1842) was the first who spoke in Russian about the use of Laennec’s stethoscope in the book on semiotics (1825). In 1828, Professor of the St. Petersburg Medical and Surgical Academy Charukovsky published a special article on the method proposed by R. Laennec. The article on the use of a stethoscope by Professor G.I. Sokolsky (1807—1886) of Moscow University, was published in 1835. Both authors refer to the R. Laennec’s book published in 1819. The shapes and sizes of stethoscopes over time (we limited ourselves only to the 19th century) underwent various modifications. And scientists working in Kharkov, Kiev and Odessa offered their own versions of stethoscopes. So, in 1880, Professor of Kharkov University I.P. Lazarevich (1829—1902) proposed to use a new instrument — a «plessymetro-stethoscope» for listening and tapping. In 1893, F.G. Yanovsky (1860—1928), who was later Professor at Novorossiysk (in Odessa) and Kiev Universities, published an article about a stethoscope that he used.
