The historical review provides data on the formation of ideas about the group of biologically active drugs – probiotics, starting with the ideas of our fellow countryman and Nobel laureate (1908) Ilya Ilyich Mechnikov. The authors consider the mechanisms of action of probiotics, their classification, effectiveness in conditions of various therapeutic pathologies, discuss the prospects for the appointment and issues of safety of probiotic drugs. Possible mechanisms by which the components of the microbiota increase blood pressure (BP), affect the levels of lipids and glucose, cause the progression of the components of the metabolic syndrome and the possibility of their correction with the use of probiotics are presented.

Key Words: I.I. Mechnikov, probiotics, mechanisms of action, classification, metabolic syndrome, historical review
