The review of literature from foreign and native sources provides historical data on the mechanisms of blood pressure regulation through the prism of millennia, the main stages of the evolution of views on the term «hypertensive disease», its main theories and clinical and pathogenetic forms, modifiable risk factors and individual pathogenetic links of disease, primarily disorders in the renin-angiotensin and sympatho-adrenal systems, the hemodynamic factor, immune and genetic mechanisms, well-known luminaries in the field of hypertension are mentioned, attention on the Kharkiv therapeutic school and academician Malaya L.T. in the study of this pathology is focused, therapeutic approaches to the correction of essential hypertension in the historical aspect in detail are discussed, and also taking into account modern Іnternational and Ukrainian recommendations for the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of this category of patients

Key words: hypertension, historical data, mechanisms of blood pressure regulation, renin-angiotensin and sympatho-adrenal systems, hemodynamic factor, immune and genetic mechanisms, luminaries in the field of hypertension, Kharkiv therapeutic school, treatment approaches.
