John Howard’s activities and memory of him in Southern Ukraine

World-famous humanist and philanthropist John Howard arrived in Kherson in 1789 to familiarize himself with the conditions of detention of prisoners and medical care for the military and civilian population. As a result of this activity, he fell ill and died in January 1790. The memory of him in Southern Ukraine is preserved to this day. Monuments have been erected at Howard’s grave and in Kherson, streets in several settlements bear his name, and various events dedicated to his memory have been held for over 200 years.
