Thus, the lower chronological framework of the study is determined by the century which accounts for the second plague pandemic. The upper frame is the beginning of the bacteriological period in the study of infectious pathology. It is shown that at first the monuments were religious in nature. Since the 18th century, secular monuments also appeared. Initially, the monuments were dedicated to God and the Saints: The Holy Trinity, the Virgin Mary, St. Roch and so on. Then, both to God and to monarchs (Plague Column in Vienna). In the XVIII century, a monument was erected in honor of the winner of Moscow plague Count Orlov («Orlov Gate» in Tsarskoye Selo, now Pushkin). Finally, in the 19th century, monuments to doctors appeared («Doctors’ Monument» in the capital of Bulgaria). An opinion was expressed that times to monuments of this kind have not passed. The 21st century is not a time for monuments of past saints and not for current rulers, but for doctors. This is in line with trends that have been identified in this work.

Key Words: epidemics of infectious diseases, monuments, XIV — middle of the second half of the XIX century, Europe.

https://dx.doi.org/10.15407/internalmed2020.02.067

Download.PDF

For citing:

Васильев, К.К. Памятники прошедшим эпидемиям // Східноєвропейський журнал внутрішньої та сімейної медицини. – 2020. – № 2. – С. 67-74. doi: 10.15407/internalmed2020.02.067.

Vasyliev KK.
